Focusing On Small Win Keywords

There will always be those few “big win” keywords that get a lot of traffic. Most people, deep down, feel that if they could find a way to get ranked in the top 5 for those keywords, they’d have it made with countless leads and a bunch of sales. Then, they get discouraged when they don’t rank for those high-traffic keywords.

No need to be discouraged. Instead, you can focus on ranking in the top five for keywords that get less traffic but will still get you lots of sales. Ranking highly for shorter, more popular keywords in search engines may not be possible.

However, when this strategy is approached correctly, long-tail keywords can send huge amounts of traffic. A simple way to achieve this is by adding a city, state, or zip code to the end of keywords. For instance, stun guns Jacksonville, stun guns Florida, stun guns 32216.

I was reminded of this recently when I was searching for something. I typed the product and then put Jacksonville at the end of it. You can also do this for cities, states, and zip codes you don’t live in.

Long-tail keywords give those with fewer resources an opportunity to get traffic that larger competitors ignore. In most cases, the traffic generated through a long-tail keyword strategy is more targeted than traffic generated through high-level, expensive keywords.

Neglecting to focus on the small wins means you lose out in the short and long term. You don’t need to hit a home run every time. Singles and bunts work just fine.

Ranking well for lesser-known keywords boosts your website’s credibility and actually increases your chances of ranking for that big win keyword down the line.

But focusing on the small wins now means you still generate business today and increase your chances of hitting it big later.
